Food
Overall, we ate great during our Adriatic travels. Croatian cuisine is a melting pot of culture and has many outside influences, including Italian, and with lots of seafood on the menu, particularly along the Adriatic coast. In Istria, the truffle is king and you can find refreshing gelato shops to beat the heat all along the coast. Below we list some of our favourite spots in Venice, Slovenia, and Croatia. We are by no means food specialists, but we really enjoyed great food without having to splurge.
Here are some of the restaurants that really enjoyed:
- Restavracija Okarina (Bled)
- Pizzeria Rustika (Bled)
- Restaurant Pri Å kofu (Ljubljana)
- Malvasija Wine Bar (Dubvrovnik)
- Azur (Dubrovnik)
- Restoran Bruschetta (Zadar)
- Pizzeria Roko (Opatija)
- Kontina Tavern (Rovinj)
- Maestral Restaurant (Rovinj)
- La bitta (Venise)
Lodging
We found (apart from in Venice and Dubrovnik) that lodging was extremely affordable. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised by many of our Airbnb rentals. Apart from our Venice rentals (which were fine, just not worthy of a great recommendation and were more expensive than the rest), we highly recommend all of our others.
Bled

This was our favourite rental of the trip. It was a two-floor apartment set in a country-style swiss house. The kitchen, small living room and washroom are on the main floor, while the bedroom and a large deck with a view of the nearby mountains were on the second floor. The apartment was a 10-minute walk from the shores of Lake Bled and most of the restaurants. A grocery store and a lovely bakery were less than 5 minutes away.
Dubrovnik

This rental (annexed to a lovely home) was simultaneously hit and miss. The bedroom was rather small, the kitchen was shared with other guests and the bathroom wasn’t en-suite. But our balcony (also shared) was large and provided us with stunning views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic sea. It was located about a 5-minute downhill walk from the old town, which was about a 10-15-minute uphill walk on the way back (fortunately there were lots of cats wandering around to keep us distracted from the effortful climb). Note that parking here was rather difficult as the could only be reached via an uphill s-shaped one-way street
Zadar

This was probably the nicest and prettiest rental of the trip. It was a bright and sunny large two-bedroom apartment (in an apartment building) located a 5 min walk from the old town. Parking was behind the building, and there was usually at least one spot available.
Rovinj

This was another very nice two-bedroom apartment (top floor of a house) located a 10-minute walk from the old town. Parking was very easy here as a spot was always available on the rental property. A small balcony in the back served as a perfect spot for our morning breakfast.
