Austria Travel Guides

Austria has no shortage of famous destinations, but we are especially fond of the central part of the country around Salzburg and the Salzkammergut, Austria’s stunning alpine lake district. From lakeside villages like St. Wolfgang, our personal favorite, and Hallstatt to the mountain viewpoints around Dachstein-Krippenstein and the Gosau Lakes, this region combines cultural landmarks, scenic drives, alpine landscapes, and some of the most beautiful lake scenery in Europe. This area can also be easily integrated into a multi-country roadtrip with Czechia and Slovenia.

This page brings together all of our Austria travel guides in one place, which focus mostly on Salzburg and the Salzkammergut rather than Vienna, with an emphasis on the places we personally enjoyed most: lakeside towns, mountain viewpoints, hiking areas, scenic detours, and unique regional experiences. One of the highlights for us was the Schafberg cog railway above St. Wolfgang, which remains one of our favorite experiences in the region.
