We have already touched on why we think it’s important to check your lodging options before booking your flights. This is particularly true if are booking somewhat last minute and you are staying in a small city or in a rural area. This is also true if you are looking into apartment rentals, have specific needs, or have your heart set on a particular neighbourhood. If you wait too long, the best deals will be gone.

We mostly book apartment rentals and prefer to book several months in advance (once we are set on our dates). This allows us to find the best possible combination of low cost, preferred neighbourhood or location, the size and esthetics of the rental, positive apartment/host ratings/reviews, room or balcony with a view, other amenities, and cancellation policy. That last item is particularly important and might impact how far in advance you will book.

Because of our preference to book rental apartments, we primarily use one of two websites. In fact, we always check both.
